Adding one coulter is advantageous, it cuts a narrow slot and leaves the surrounding soil relatively undisturbed. With more coulters, however, you can increase the level of fracturing. Two coulters, usually staggered front to back, allow for residue flow-through and leave a mellow planting strip. Consider three or more coulters for maximum soil lifting and fracturing.
